POMONA, Calif. – Saturday being the last qualifying session of the 2007 hot rod season, all the drag racing teams at the 43rd annual NHRA Auto Club Nationals had nothing to hold back, but what was witnessed at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona has to be one 23-year old, Morgan Lucas will never forget.POMONA, Calif. – Saturday being the last qualifying session of the 2007 hot rod season, all the drag racing teams at the 43rd annual NHRA Auto Club Nationals had nothing to hold back, but what was witnessed at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona has to be one 23-year old, Morgan Lucas will never forget.
He rocketed to a career best miles-per-hour of 330.47 exceeding his previous best of 328.94 mph back in May of 2005 at Topeka. He stepped up his qualifying program running a pass of 4.541 seconds and normally that impressive elapsed time would be foreseen to end way up in the top half of the field, but not this time. To show the competitiveness of the Top Fuel field, his posted run positioned him in the No. 9 spot on the race ladder racing Doug Foley for the first time ever.
“It’s the World Finals,” said Lucas. “It’s the last time to shine and look good. I was lying in bed this morning thinking to myself ‘I really would like to go 330 miles-per-hour sometime’ and today I accomplished that goal.
“We’ll be the first pair out tomorrow being the No. 9 qualifier in what’s becoming my most commonly qualifying place in drag racing so we’ll keep racking up that number. One of these days a win is going to happen. The pairings are setup to run Schumacher second round. I really hope to win my race so we can create some havoc in the points deal.”
Under cloudless skies the low humid air offered the nitromethane burning teams’ ideal conditions giving the NHRA speed traps a good working out and Lucas was one of those to benefit with his new career best speed of 330.47 in front of a good friend.
“I feel like a weight has been lifted off me,” said Lucas. “I’m happy for my friend, Casey Suzuki who was out here and I have to give it to him – he had a stroke recently and his friends are proud of him for coming out.
Lucas is managing double-duty driving very well and in his first round of eliminations in the Lucas Oil Top Alcohol series, he escaped trouble after kicking the tires loose at the hit of the throttle, but recovered and settled down to run a winning first round time of 5.964 seconds, 250..60 mph to his opponent, Joey Serverance coasting time of 8.404 seconds, 99.87 mph.
“I had a pretty lucky day today in the first round of Alcohol and I had to race a real tough competitor, Joey Severance and he had bad fortune today. We got lucky and got around him.
“Who knows, maybe things are looking good for me this weekend and we can have a positive outcome. I’m just so happy I set a career best at my own home track, Pomona.
ESPN2 will air the final rounds of the Auto Club NHRA Finals at 7 p.m. EST on Sunday, Nov. 4.
