READING, Pa. - Morgan Lucas posted a time of 3.889 seconds at 307.16 mph Friday evening in his Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster to earn the No.4 position in the provisional field of the 24th annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.
“No. 4 is great for more reasons than one,” said a delighted Lucas. “It’s the true symbol of the progress we’re making. The fact that J.R. (Lucas’ teammate, Todd) is in the top eight is a big deal for us. Jimmy (Walsh, crew chief) is doing a great job for us bringing so much to the table like we knew he would. The guy is worth his weight in gold by all means. When you can get two chiefs to work so well together it really shows in the results and I’m very proud of that.
“A top four, by mile an hour, I’m not mad about that. My visor fogged up and I’m not making excuses, but I may have rolled in too deep, but it gave me a great reaction time. If we had been shallow (staging) and just flickered my light like my normal deal it could have been a 3.87. The bottom line is we’re running well and we have a great race car. That’s what we like to see.”
ESPN2 will air the qualifying highlights on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. EDT.
