READING, Pa. – J.R. Todd had a heartrending first round of eliminations at the 24th annual Toyo Tires Nationals against Clay Millican. Todd, who left the starting first (.038-.063), appeared to have his opponent covered until his Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment Top Fuel dragster started hazing the tires resulting in a very close finish, but still an unfortunate loss for the John Stewart-led team.
Todd recorded an elapsed time of 4.208 seconds, 258.86 mph to Millican’s winning pass of 3.967 seconds, 298.01 mph
With the first round loss, his title hopes of contending for the NHRA Countdown to 1 Top Fuel championship has come to a formal conclusion being mathematically eliminated with only one racing event left on the calendar.
“From this point on, all we’re concentrating on is winning races,” said Todd.
After the completion of 17 NHRA races, Todd will wind up 612 points and will remain in the No. 13 position.
Todd had a grand qualifying effort of 3.888 seconds, 306.26 mph placing him in the No. 4 starting position for the race, tying his best qualifying performance of the season since the Route 66 Raceway in Chicago
The next NHRA National event will be the prestigious 54th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals from August 29 – September 1 at the O’Reilly Raceway Park in Clermont, Indiana.
