Hey guys, can we start having some fun yet?
For cripe’s sake, can someone get the email address of the Luck Fairy?
This is really taking the word “sucky” to unheard of levels.
Cory Mac. It’s hard not to like him. Man, he’s been there and back. At one time, was probably the best known driver in Top Fuel when he was driving for Joe Gibbs and was sponsored by McDonalds. Those were some heady times for Cory and just about everyone knows he’s finished second in the points not once, not twice, no, not even three times, BUT FOUR TIMES!
Did you know he won the first national event he ever entered in his Top Alcohol Dragster in 1989 when he went the distance at the Mile-High Nationals in Denver? Did you know in 1997, he swept the Western Swing—Denver-Seattle-Sonoma—and then came within one race of doing it again in 1998. (If you’re really paying attention, you know J.R. almost swept the “Swing” as a rookie in 2006). God, I’m beginning to sound like Bob Frey…!
And perhaps you didn’t know Cory Mac was one of Scott Kalitta’s best friends in or out of the sport. Scott’s son’s name is Cory. Connect the dots.
So the fact that Cory Mac took out both Morgan and J.R. in Norwalk was a bitter pill, but you can’t get your panties into too big of a bind because, well, Cory Mac has more than paid his dues.
But losing isn’t a whole lot of fun, either, especially when you’re trying to get into the top ten and just a few round wins here and a few more there would do the trick. Morgan is now 11th and J.R. is 12th and 54 points are separating them. Morgan is 32 points behind Doug Kalitta who is in 10th. That’s less than two rounds of racing—and Doug lost in the first round on Sunday. So, not to add insult to injury, but if Morgan could have advanced to the semi’s he’d now be in 10th.
Like he needs me to tell him that.
Norwalk had a very bizarre vibe to it this year. Water seeping up onto the track. Crews working all night to dry it up. (Anyone remember Topeka, 1997?) Gary Scelzi and Melanie Troxel both getting tossed for ballast infractions. Rain delays. Hector Arana—sponsored by Lucas Oil—winning his first national event in Pro Stock Motorcycle after 18 years of futility. Doug Herbert winning Top Fuel in memory of his two sons who were killed in February in a traffic accident as we all continue to cope with Scott Kalitta’s death in E-town.
Just a strange brew, people.
So, let’s go back to my original questions. Where’s the fun, good luck, and the non-sucky part of what’s going on out there? Six more races to make the top ten and if you think the Fun Factor has been a little short lately on Team Lucas, try to imagine the mood around there if our two heroes miss the Countdown to One. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Two weeks until the Western Swing begins in Denver.
Great. Time to watch out for Cory Mac again.
