INDIANAPOLIS – Lucas Oil Dodge Status Pro Stock driver, Larry Morgan celebrated his 29th wedding anniversary with a runner-up finish in that division at the 54th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.
The Newark, Ohio, resident raced to his 22nd overall final round appearance of his career and fifth at just O’Reilly Raceway Park in search of his tenth win after taking out Jason Line in the opening round, then defeated Ricky Jones in the quarterfinals, and in the semi-finals kayoed Ron Krisher by the slim margin to two-thousandths (.002) of a second before being defeated by Dave Connolly in the finals.
Morgan left the line first in the finals (.031 - .044) and ran an elapsed time of 6.797 seconds, 204.70 mph to Connolly’s 6.743 seconds, 206.04 mph.
Morgan’s last win at Indy was in 1989 and he had runner-up finishes from 1990-92 before today’s final round appearance.
“Today was our day and we were lucky enough to get there,” said a merry Morgan. “We made the right moves and obviously they didn’t during the race. Hey, getting the Lucas Oil car in the finals was good and we needed to do that for Forrest and Charlotte Lucas. My guys did a good job all weekend and it was just unfortunate we shook the tires in the finals. We’re just delighted to be there at this race. What can I say, I love Lucas Oil.”
Morgan entered the race from the No. 14 starting position with his qualifying run of 6.688 seconds, 206.01 mph.
He is currently 13th in the POWERade Pro Stock points with 643 points at the conclusion of 18 of 24 NHRA National events.
The next NHRA National event will be the Carolina Nationals at the Carolina Dragway at Concord on Sept. 11-14.
