PHOENIX (Feb. 21) -- The Lucas Oil-branded car of Top Fuel driver Shawn Langdon did not produce the results the team was hoping for during Sunday's elimination rounds of the 26th annual Arizona NHRA Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.
After several rain showers delayed the start of competition, Langdon's Lucas Oil/Speedco dragster lost to team owner and stablemate Morgan Lucas's GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster.
"It was just unfortunate for our team," Langdon said of facing his boss in Round 1. "On a brighter note it was good it happened against a teammate because Morgan got to advance a round. It's just kind of a bittersweet deal."
Langdon had the best reaction time of the round but the car's powerplant started to misfire pretty much from the start, hampering his efforts. Meanwhile, Lucas ran a pass of 3.843 seconds at 315.49 mph as Langdon limped across in 6.425 at 101.85 mph.
"We're upset," Langdon said. "We had a good opportunity to make a great weekend out of this. We made three great runs in qualifying and just choked in the first round. We misread the weather and misread the track. It's unfortunate for our team but for Morgan Lucas Racing as a group, it was good to see Morgan move on."
